Team Accomplishments

  • Brazil has won more World Cup's than any other nation, having won 5 out of the 19 tournaments held.
  • Second place goes to the Italians with 4 championships, while the Germans are third with 3
  • The Germans do however, have the record for most final four appearances with 11
  • The title of most appearances in the World Cup final game is shared by Germany and Brazil, with 7 appearances each.
  • Germany and Brazil are also tied with most matches played at 92 apiece.
  • Mexico is the only country to have hosted the country twice (1970 and 1986), after Colombia was forced to withdraw due to economic reasons after initially being chosen.
  • Only team to have participated in every World Cup?  Brazil.
  • Most goals scored by a team in World Cup play?  Once again, Brazil with 201.
  • Most allowed?  Germany, letting in 112 goals.
  • Most games won?  Again, Brazil takes this honour with 64.
  • Most lost?  Mexico, having lost 22 games.  ¡Ay, Dios mio!
  • The record for most goals scored by a team in a tournament was set by the great Hungarian (yes, you read that right) team of 1958 who scored 27 at that tournament
  • Amazingly enough, the record for most meetings between two teams goes to Brazil and Sweden, having met 7 times in World Cup play

Individual Honors

  • The record for most goals scored in a tournament goes to Just Fontaine of France, who managed to score an astonishing 13 goals at the 1958 tournament
  • Not surprisingly, a Brazilian named Ronaldo holds the record for most goals scored overall in World Cup competition, with 15 goals scored over 3 tournaments.
  • The title of most championships won by a player goes to the great Pele, who won 3 championships during his career (1958, 1962, 1970)
  • Pele also holds the record for youngest goal scorer (17 years, 239 days), and youngest player to score a hat trick
  • The record for most goals scored in a tournament goes to Just Fontaine of France, who managed to score an astonishing 13 goals at the 1958 tournament
  • The youngest player to ever play in a World Cup tournament match was Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland at 17 years, 41 days
  • However, the youngest player to have played in a World Cup Qualifying match was Souleymane Mamam of Togo who in 2001 played a match at the amazing age of 13 years, 310 days!
